On this edition of PlayitDreamitTuesday, 24 November, 2020. We have with us Dr. Lindsay Sarah Krasnoff, an international sports writer, historian, and consultant and we will be discussing, “media as a tool for women’s sports advancement”.
QUESTIONS OF THE DAY
Q1: Moving forward to our first question, What is your take on using sports for development?
A1: This is a great question. Sports for development overlaps with sports diplomacy. Both can be useful tools: they’re multifaceted, can be multilateral & work to enrich communities. But must be part of holistic approaches
Sports is indeed a great tool for development.
Q2: It is a known fact that there are quite a number of challenges faced by women in sports. What are the challenges faced in promoting women’s sport through the media?
A2: There’s many challenges that promoting women’s sports through media must overcome. The biggest greater mediatization of women’s sports is a necessity. You cannot dream it if you cannot watch, read, or listen to it.
Q3:We all want to see more of women’s sports on our screens, so what can be done to overcome this challenge?
A3: How to break the cycle, It begins with media decision-makers committing to cover women’s sports, to do it thoroughly and to do it well. Quotas that x% of sports coverage be of women’s sports? Maybe to start.
Wow! just like a quota of x% is given to women in politics, same should be initiated and implemented in media sports coverage.
Yes, what if more women’s sports were broadcast on television and radio, covered by sports news podcasts, and written about by print & digital outlets? There will be more:
- Ticket-buying fans
- Opportunities to play
Sponsors also have a vital role to play in the equation of how to jump-start greater, quality coverage of women’s sports. They can take leadership by investing in not only women’s sports, but also in their mediatization.
Wow! quite insightful.
Fans can play a role by demonstrating their commitment to supporting, watching, following women’s sports. Buying tickets, merchandise, lobbying media and sponsors to provide greater coverage & opportunities
Male athletes can demonstrate their support for the female counterparts and encourage others to support women’s, pro/amateur sports in numerous ways. One example: how NBA players show admiration & support for WNBA on social media.
That is this for today’s edition.
