Chi (full name withheld), a four-year-old girl was sexually harassed and molested her by father, Mr. Chukwudi Okpara, popularly known as “rabbi”.

Her mother, Ms. Gloria on a visit to the head office of FAME Foundation, alleged that she was physically and sexually abused by Mr. Rabbi. She also said that, she started having suspicions of her daughter being abused by her father last year when she saw his hands inside her panties around late hours of the night, while they were asleep.

After several investigations conducted by the police and medical checkup by NAPTIP, it was discovered that Chi has been molested vaginally and anally with both of her organs wide open.

Mr. Chukwudi who is currently in the police custody has shown no signs of remorse and is bragging that he will soon be released due to his connection.

In Nigeria, lots of women and girls have been subjected to Gender Based Violence and this issue needs to be dealt with urgently. Studies has shown that every year, about two million women and girls are sexually assaulted in the country. However, only few are reported.

When cases of Gender-Based violence are reported, only few offenders get punished and this has increased its’ menace, due to lack of proper implementation of laws that have been put in place.

Victims of Gender-Based Violence experience difficulties reporting cases of abuse due to fear, stigma and lack of justice. Together as a society, we have to encourage victims of GBV to speak up by ensuring that all perpetrators are punished.

Hence, we have to ensure that justice is served and Mr. Chukwudi, “rabbi “is brought before the law.

Let us together lend our voices to ensure that Chi gets Justice.

FAME Foundation is calling on the Nigerian Police, Government authorities, CSOs and human rights organizations to look into this matter urgently and ensure that Mr. Chukwudi is brought to face the law and is held accountable for his crimes.
