Today December 10 marks the International Day of Human Rights and the end of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. This day is also a celebration of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the United Nations in 1948.
Human Rights Day is celebrated globally to raise awareness about the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being. It encourages governments, civil society organizations, and individuals to further the cause of equality and protection of the rights of all individuals – irrespective of race, color, religion, or sex. It is also an opportunity to reaffirm the importance of human rights in re-building the world we want to live in,
This year is themed, “Equality: Reducing inequalities, advancing human rights”. It relates to Equality and Article 1 of UDHR, which says, “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights”.The principles of equality and non-discrimination are at the heart of human rights.
By the virtue of our humanity, human rights are the entitlement of every human. FAME Foundation urges Government, CSOs, and individuals to take place the fundamental rights of all citizens as one of its priorities.
Advocating for the fundamental rights of women and girls goes beyond 16 days of Activism and Human Rights Day. The fight against GBV and inequalities must continue, till we ensure it is curbed and becomes non-existent.
