FAME foundation was established to solicit, encourage and advance the social, emotional and economic wellbeing of women and girls as well as formulate programmes within the framework of national development plan with a view to enhancing the participation of women and advocate for gender parity in the society.
FAME foundation firmly believe that the entire nation, businesses, communities and groups can benefit from the implementation of programs and policies that adopt the notion of women empowerment.
International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on the progress made so far, call for change, and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.
FAME Foundation in commemoration of International Women’s Day 2022, organizes the Generation Equality International Football Tournament, with support from the joint EU-UN Spotlight Initiative, Bet9ja, and FCT Football Association. This annual all-women football tournament is organized to promote gender equality, highlight roles women play in society, and recognize the impact of women in every life.
Since 2017, excluding the year 2021, FAME Foundation has organized football tournaments and dialogues to mark the significance of the day set aside to celebrate women from different spheres of society.
Speaking at the unveiling, Ms. Aderonke Bello emphasized the power of using sports as a tool for advocacy, movement building, and development.
“Nigeria is a heterogeneous country, and football is one of the few things that unite us as a country, hence FAME Foundation is using it as a tool and platform to celebrate Nigerian women and speak up against every form of Gender-Based Violence,” she said.
The ten teams participating in this year’s football tournament are; have Team UN, Team EU, Team UK, Team USA, Team Brekete Family (Human Rights Radio), Team FCT SWAN (Sports Writers Association Nigeria), Team FAME/AMAC, TEAM East Africa (Countries from East African nations/embassy in Abuja), Team NCWS, and Team Iya Loja (Market Women).
Mr. Sunday Dare, the Honorable Minister for Youth and Sports, will be refereeing the tournament. The football match will also be kicked-off by Dame Pauline Tallen, Minister for Women Affairs, alongside Lois Auta, Founder/CEO of Cedar Seed Foundation.
