The Edo State Gender-Based Violence Management Committee (Edo GBVMC), has expressed satisfaction on a recent court judgment against a gender-based violence offender, Michael Ogoke.
The 57-year-old was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment without option of fine, for raping a 7-year-old girl, by Magistrate E. O. Aimofumeh (special grade) of Ebvoriaria Magistrate Court, in Benin City.
The convict was arraigned on the 11 May 2021, in the case COP v. Michael Ogoke, with case number MOR/199C/2021A, on a one-count charge of rape, under section 358 of the criminal code.
Commenting on the judgement, wife of the State Governor and Chairperson of the Committee, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, said the judgment has spurred the Committee to keep on waging the war against any forms of Gender-Based Violence in the State.
She said with the judgment, it is now crystal clear that there is no hiding place for any person who is indulging in any forms of Gender-Based Violence.
“I keep saying conviction, conviction and when we get conviction, we are energized and we are happy”, she said.
The Edo First Lady who noted that sanity has begun to return to the State as regards war against rape and other related abuses against the girl-child, said that it will also spread across the country.
She added who added that a rape case is a case against the State, said that the State Government will take over the case, that if the parents of the victim suggest out of court settlement, the State Government will take over the case.
Also speaking, the State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, expressed satisfaction that the fight against rape has yielded positive results.
Shaibu said the State Government will stop at nothing to ensure that the lives of the citizens of the State are protected especially the girl-child.
He said the State has set the pace for others to follow with the recent court judgment.
On his part, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Edo State Mr. Wole Iyamu, thanked the Ministry of Justice for standing on the side of the people.
He said the State will not negotiate or withdraw any cases against any offenders of Gender Based Violence and that the ministry will pursue the case to the letter.
