FAME foundation was established to solicit, encourage and advance the social, emotional and economic wellbeing of women and girls as well as formulate programmes within the framework of national development plan with a view to enhancing the participation of women and advocate for gender parity in the society.
FAME foundation firmly believe that the entire nation, businesses, communities and groups can benefit from the implementation of programs and policies that adopt the notion of women empowerment.
On August 26, 2022, FAME Foundation organized yet another Sport for Development session under its PLAY it DREAM it initiative aimed at addressing gender inequality and educating girls through sport with support from French Development Agency (AFD) and Global Sports Mentoring Program (GSMP). The boot camp with about 80 Internally Displaced Girls from Wassa IDP Camp, Apo Settlement, was held at Area 3 Football Pitch, Garki Abuja.
Women’s engagement in sports challenges gender norms and social expectations, creating positive role models and demonstrating that men and women are as powerful within and outside the sporting community.
The beneficiaries were welcomed and registered in the dressing room before Mrs. Dinah Abohwo, a FAME Foundation volunteer, led a 10-minute energetic aerobics dancing exercise. The girls worked together to get ready for the football drill. Their excitement was palpable.
Following that were the 25 minutes of football drills and exercises conducted by Coach Segun. The football drills and matches were carried out according to the different age groups of the girls.
Afterward, a pep talk session by the PLAY it DREAM it mentor of the month ensued. He spoke on how girls should nurture their passion for sports but not neglect or at the expense of their education. The world is constantly evolving, hence they will need education, empowerment, and exposure to attain greatness.
While he was speaking, Coach Segun was by the side translating it into the Hausa language for those that could not understand English.
The boot camp ended with the girls asking questions and sharing what they have learned from the mentoring session.
