A not-for-profit organization in Nigeria, FAME Foundation is organizing the Green Ball Walk for Climate 2022, a diverse and multigenerational movement that unites people from all walks of life to raise awareness of the current climate crisis and demand climate action.
As government, organizations, and corporations all over the world are taking decisive climate action and paving the way for a greener, more sustainable future, it is pertinent to take this action towards a safe society.
Climate activists, CSOs, grassroots communities, farmers, professionals, youth activists, sports stakeholders, academics, and members of the general public will participate with one goal in mind – calling on Nigeria’s delegates to sustainable action at COP27 in Egypt, as the walk will be an avenue to ask them to play sustainable roles that will help in combating climate change.
Addressing the media in Abuja, Executive Director of FAME Foundation, Aderonke Ogunleye-Bello added that the walk is intended to demand Nigerian government and global leaders to step up for climate action, awareness and lasting policy and mechanism.
“We want to call on relevant agencies in Nigeria to rise to the task by making fast provisions in adopting the Climate Change Act and urge all political aspirants ahead of the 2023 general elections to include Climate Change in their manifesto and plans for the betterment of the citizen and environment,” she said.
She continues by saying that deegates to COP27 are expected to discuss and negotiate in favour of Nigerians, “the walk will take place few weeks before COP27 in Egypt and we want to draw attention to some of the climate issues impacting local communities and enlist the participation of participants to discuss practical and sustainable solutions for Nigeria, as we can see how flood is ravaging the environment, this is avoidable if the rapid climate actions are taken by the government.”
Since people from different areas and specialization in the society will be mobilized for the walk, Ms Ogunleye-Bello, indicated that the discussion during and after the walk will be vigorous, educative and impactful.
