FAME foundation was established to solicit, encourage and advance the social, emotional and economic wellbeing of women and girls as well as formulate programmes within the framework of national development plan with a view to enhancing the participation of women and advocate for gender parity in the society.
FAME foundation firmly believe that the entire nation, businesses, communities and groups can benefit from the implementation of programs and policies that adopt the notion of women empowerment.
Lack of knowledge about menstruation can result in harmful prejudice and misconceptions, deprive girls of typical childhood experiences and activities, and negatively affect their overall education, health, and well-being. Improving menstrual health in women and girls can lead to long-lasting effects on women.
With support from the French Development Agency (AFD), the Global Sports Empowerment Program, and Numak & April Pharma Ltd., FAME Foundation organized its 3rd Menstrual Health and Personal Hygiene Workshop for Internally Displaced women and girls in observance of International Day of the Girl-Child 2022.
The workshop was organized to promote good personal hygiene, close the knowledge and inequality gap, alongside demystifying menstruation for IDP women and girls. The workshop took place at the Durumi IDP camp, Area 1, Abuja, on October 15, 2022. In attendance were about 200 displaced women and girls, alongside speakers and volunteers from FAME Foundation.
Beginning the workshop was an interactive session among the participants on the myths and misconceptions about menstruation they grew up knowing.
Afterward, Ms. Deborah Abuno spoke about menstruation, the menstrual cycle, and practical tips for keeping oneself clean while having a period.
Following that, Ms. Pat Odigie enlightened participants on how to properly use and maintain reusable sanitary pads. The participants also demonstrated what they were taught during this session.
Speaking at the event, Mrs. Dinah Abohwo enlightened the participants on the importance of personal hygiene.
Personal hygiene is the most basic yet highly ignored daily habit. It’s critical to maintain excellent hygiene, she said.
Reusable sanitary pads and starter packets to produce reusable pads were distributed to the participants after the workshop. Reusable sanitary products will assure sustainability, reduce period poverty, and have a good impact on our environment.
