International Human Rights Day is celebrated annually around the world on 10 December every year to commemorate the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948.
This day is observed globally to promote equality, peace, justice, freedom, and the protection of human dignity.
Human rights refer to rights or freedom, including the right to live, health, education, freedom of speech and thoughts, and equal rights. They embody values in our society, such as fairness, dignity, equality, and respect. They are a means of protection for us all, especially those who may face abuse, neglect, and isolation.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) sets out a broad range of fundamental rights and guarantees the rights of every individual everywhere, without distinction based on nationality, place of residence, gender, national or ethnic origin, religion, language, or any other status. It also includes civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights.
People deserve to be treated fairly, with dignity, and with respect. Every person deserves a set of rights by which they can live their life as they choose and without being oppressed, suppressed, or owned by someone else.
The theme for Human Rights Day 2022 is dignity, freedom, and justice for all, and the call to action is #StandUp4HumanRights.
Despite the efforts to protect human rights, the hostility toward human rights and those who defend them continues to rise. As a result, this year’s Human Rights Day advocates for everyone to stand up for their rights, including civil, economic, political, and cultural rights. The day also acknowledges the advocates and defenders of human rights.
There is a need for individuals to know and understand their fundamental human rights and ensure that everyone can live a life of dignity. Today, we reaffirm our commitment to continue standing up for the rights of individuals in the communities we work, especially women and girls and persons living with disabilities.
We also call on the government, CSOs, institutions, and individuals to #StandUp4HumanRights and uphold the rights of every individual, regardless of our differences.
