FAME Foundation Calls for an End to Female Genital Mutilation
In commemoration of the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, FAME Foundation, a not-for-profit organization set up for the empowerment and development of women and girls in Nigeria and Africa, calls on all nations to outlaw all harmful behaviors that affect women and girls, especially female genital mutilation, and to take all necessary precautions, such as enforcing relevant laws, raising public awareness, and allocating adequate resources to safeguard women and girls against this type of violence.
We demand specific protection and support for girls and women who have experienced female genital mutilation as well as for those who are vulnerable, such as migrant and refugee women.
The term “female genital mutilation” (FGM) refers to all practices that result in the partial or complete removal of the external female genitalia or other harm to the female genital organs for non-medical purposes.
End Female Genital Mutilation NOW
FGM is regarded as a violation of girls’ and women’s human rights on a global scale. It represents a severe kind of discrimination against women and indicates entrenched gender inequality.
It violates children’s rights because it almost always involves minors. Additionally, when the surgery results in death, it violates a person’s right to life as well as their rights to physical integrity, safety, and health as well as their right to be free from torture and other cruel, inhumane, or humiliating treatment.
On this day, governments, member states, civil society organizations, development partners, activists, and other relevant stakeholders can raise awareness, renew commitments, and reiterate that female genital mutilation is an unacceptable harmful practice and a violation of women’s and girls’ fundamental human rights.
The International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation takes place on February 6, 2023, annually.
