In commemoration of the International Day of People Living Together in Peace, Executive Director FAME Foundation, Ms. Aderonke Ogunleye-Bello has urged all individuals and communities to acknowledge, respect, and value each other’s cultures and diversity.
The International Day of Living Together in Peace is observed annually on May 16 to promote peace, tolerance, inclusion, understanding, and solidarity among individuals and communities worldwide. Its purpose is to highlight the need of promoting peaceful cohabitation, mutual respect, and unity among individuals from all origins.
Speaking to the press, Ms. Aderonke Ogunleye-Bello emphasized on the importance of a peaceful society. She urges people to live in a united and peaceful way by listening to, respecting, and appreciating others.
“I’d like to emphasize that this day serves as an important reminder for governments and individuals all across the world. It is a day to foster diversity, communication, and cross-cultural understanding. Nigeria is a diverse society with many distinct cultures, religious beliefs, and languages and a peaceful society is what fosters the growth and development of the society. I call on everyone to promote a society that values, peace, compassion and tolerance on this day. The value of unity among us cannot be overstated. People should make the decision to reject violence, bigotry, and exclusion in favor of encouraging love, respect, and solidarity among one another. The government should fund activities like sports, peace education programs, community development, and campaigns that promote peace, kindness, and respect among people.”
She also emphasized the need of promoting and supporting respect for fundamental freedom and human rights for all people without difference based on gender, ethnicity, race, or religion.
She urges everyone to stop engaging in racism, hate speech, and intolerance because these traits contribute to a violent and unfair society.
She stated that everyone should work together to bring about reconciliation, compassion, and forgiveness in order to make the world a better place.
The International Day of Living Together in Peace provides a chance for people from all around the world to join together and celebrate peace and this year’s theme are “United in differences and diversity.”
It is also an opportunity to reflect on the challenges we encounter in creating a more peaceful society.
