World Environment Day (WED) is observed yearly on June 5th to raise awareness and action for environmental conservation. This day aims to promote awareness about the importance of environmental preservation and the challenges that require our attention, such as human overpopulation, global warming, pollution, and conservation.
The year 2023 will mark the 50th edition of World Environment Day, which will be celebrated under the theme “Solutions to Plastic Pollution #BeatPlasticPollution.” highlighting the harmful packaging practices employed by some Asian countries (companies) and the detrimental impact of non-biodegradable materials like nylons and cello tape.
These packaging materials, including, nylons and cello tape, significantly contribute to the plastic pollution crisis. These materials harm ecosystems, wildlife, and human health. They persist in the environment for hundreds of years, polluting landfills, water, and releasing harmful chemicals. Plastic pollution has broader implications beyond the environment. It blocks drainage systems, increasing flood risks during the rainy season.
Speaking to the press, Ms. Aderonke Ogunleye-Bello, Executive Director, FAME Foundation urges all companies to desist from harmful packaging practices.
“Today we celebrate our home, the Earth, and we acknowledge the environmental damage that has been done; however, we must also find ways to reverse these damages. The earth is the only home to mankind and if we do not take care of our home, who will?
This year’s theme focuses on the usage of plastic and i implore each and every one of you to stop using plastic and recognize it as the cause of the harm being done to the earth.
Today, we must confront the alarming consequences of plastic pollution caused by irresponsible packaging. The time is now for you to take stock of your behavior and resolve to lead a more sustainable lifestyle.
I urge you to preserve the environment and cease polluting it in order to avoid losing lives and property. We should learn to curb indiscriminate waste disposal and residents should work with the government to ensure a cleaner environment.”
It is also necessary for these companies to take quick and concrete steps to address the risks linked with their packaging methods. Using sustainable alternatives such as biodegradable materials and recyclable packaging can help to lower their plastic footprint and contribute to a cleaner world.
She stressed the importance of protecting the earth since it is the only livable planet that provides clean air, fresh water, food, and oxygen to thousands of species, including humans.
She emphasized that protecting the earth and encouraging healthy lifestyles are not just the duty of the government, and she urged individuals to consume less, reduce, reuse, and recycle garbage in order to lessen what should have been discarded. She further encouraged people to educate others, preserve water, and support the planting of trees, which are a valuable source of food and oxygen.
World Environment Day reminds us of our collective power to bring about positive change. Let us reaffirm our commitment to finding innovative solutions, raising awareness, and inspiring action against plastic pollution. By addressing these harmful packaging practices and promoting sustainable alternatives, we can create a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable world for future generations.
