The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Minna wants to warn all residents in Kwara state about an upcoming flood. This flood is expected to happen in the Ilorin West and Ilorin East Local Government Areas (LGAs) from July to November.
The Nigeria Hydrological Service Agency predicted this flood earlier in the year and has labeled Ilorin West and Ilorin East LGAs as “High Flood Risk Areas.” This means that these areas are very likely to experience significant flooding during those months. Other LGAs like Patigi, Offa, Edu, and Oyun are considered “moderate flood risk areas” and may also face high levels of flooding during the same time.
To protect their communities from flooding, residents are strongly advised to take necessary precautions. It’s crucial to properly maintain drainage systems and avoid blocking waterways and channels. Regularly cleaning drains is essential to prevent water blockages. For those living near River Niger and its tributaries, it’s wise to consider preparing for possible relocation if water levels rise.
Remember, prevention is the best approach to deal with disasters. Please take these warnings seriously and take necessary actions to safeguard your lives and belongings. Stay safe!
