FAME Foundation in partnership with the French Embassy in Nigeria, organized its advocacy sensitization outreach on Tuesday, November, 28 2023. The theme of the event was “Uniting Boys to Invest Against Gender Based Violence” (GBV): a topic aimed at engaging and empowering boys and men in the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) through awareness and campaign during the 16 Days of Activism 2023, as well as further empowering communities through education and awareness.
The event was held in the L.E.A Primary School in Jabi Kpadna, Abuja, with 50 boys, three speakers, and representatives from various media outlets in attendance.
The event began with a brief dance performed by the young boys, followed by the National Anthem and the introduction of the guests.
Mr Tpl Mubdiyu Mustapha, a sports enthusiast, presented the first educational session by describing gender-based violence and how to prevent it. He also emphasized that while gender-based violence is frequent among women, boys and men are also victims of violence and abuse. He urged and encouraged the boys to speak up whenever someone tries to abuse them. The student asked few questions at the end of the session.
Mr. Tolu Oguntimehin, the second speaker, in addition to enlightening participants, stressed the duty of parents in protecting their children from abuse. He also mentions parents listening to their children rather than pushing them away when they approach them. Furthermore, he encouraged the boys to communicate with someone else if their parents were unavailable.
Lastly, Mr Usman Mikai addressed bullying and oppression. He also asked the participants to quit bullying their classmates and to report anyone who attempts to bully them to the right authorities.
The event concluded with a closing speech from Madame Ketty Regis, a representative from the French Embassy Nigeria.
