Today marks the International Day of Zero Waste, an important moment calling for unified action to address the escalating waste crisis. The theme for this year is ‘From Waste to Resource’. It highlights the imperative of transforming waste materials into valuable resources through innovative and sustainable practices.
Speaking to the press, Arabinrin Aderonke Ogunleye-Bello, Executive Director of FAME Foundation, seizes this moment to advocate for global collaboration in addressing waste management challenges,
“As billions of tons of waste accumulate annually, our planet faces an unprecedented environmental challenge. The unchecked proliferation of waste not only threatens delicate ecosystems but also poses grave risks to public health and sustainability. From bustling urban centers to remote communities, the impact of excessive waste accumulation is felt worldwide.”
Arabinrin Aderonke emphasizes the importance of collaborative action on this International Zero Waste Day,
“Today, as we observe the International Zero Waste Day, it is imperative that we come together as a global community to address the challenges posed by excessive waste generation. By fostering collaboration among governments, businesses, civil society, and individuals, we can develop innovative solutions and implement effective waste management strategies.”
She stated,
“In Nigeria, communities grapple with the adverse effects of inadequate waste management systems. Overflowing landfills, pollution of waterways, and air contamination are just a few of the consequences. This underscores the urgent need for decisive action to improve waste management practices and promote sustainable alternatives. On this International Zero Waste Day, the Green Ball Project, an initiative of FAME Foundation, is leveraging sports as a unifying tool to drive climate change awareness and action among Nigerian citizens, contributing to a greener narrative for our planet.”
She further stated that the International Zero Waste Day serves as a call to action, stakeholders at all levels must reevaluate consumption patterns, prioritize waste reduction, and promote recycling and reuse initiatives. Businesses must be encouraged to adopt sustainable practices.
