International Day of Sport for Development and Peace 2024
As the world commemorates the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) this year, FAME Foundation, an NGO based in Abuja, reiterates the importance of sport and physical activity in fostering peace and inclusivity.
Since its inception by the United Nations General Assembly in 2013, the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace has served as a call to action for global solidarity, recognizing the transformative power of sports in promoting dialogue, inclusion, and sustainable development.
The theme for this year is “Sport for the Promotion of Peaceful and Inclusive Societies”.
Speaking to the press, Arabinrin Aderonke Ogunleye-Bello, Executive Director, FAME Foundation, underscored the importance of harnessing sport as a catalyst for positive societal change,
“Sport can channel our collective passion, energy, and enthusiasm towards a common cause. We need to leverage the immense potential of sport to pave the way for a brighter and more sustainable future for all. Through sports, individuals learn invaluable life skills, including teamwork, resilience, and respect, fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment.”
She emphasized the transformative impact of sport-based initiatives within communities,
“PLAY It DREAM It” an initiative of FAME Foundation addresses pressing issues prevalent in Nigeria, particularly in conflict-affected regions. These regions face multifaceted challenges ranging from banditry, kidnapping, insurgency, and communal clashes, resulting in humanitarian crises, gender-based violence, exploitation, and limited access to education and healthcare. The project targets girls and women residing in Internally Displaced People’s (IDP) camps, empowering them through sports while advocating for gender equality, education, and health awareness.”
Arabinrin Aderonke further stated that through sports, beneficiaries of the Play It Dream It not only experience physical and mental benefits but also develop critical life skills that transcend the playing field. Whether through football, basketball, or other sports activities, individuals find common ground, break down barriers, and form bonds that defy social divides.
She further urged everyone to reaffirm their commitment to leveraging sports as a force for positive change. Together, we can harness the universal language of sports to overcome barriers, bridge divides, and create a brighter future for all.
FAME Foundation continues its commitment to harnessing the unifying power of sports to foster peace, inclusivity, and sustainable development.
