Annually, on April 22, the global community unites to commemorate World Earth Day, a day dedicated to fostering environmental awareness and activism.
This year, the theme is “Planet vs Plastics,” which aims to spotlight the pressing issue of plastic pollution and its detrimental impact on the environment.
Speaking to the press, Arabinrin Aderonke Ogunleye-Bello, Executive Director, FAME Foundation, underscored the urgency of tackling plastic pollution,
” Aside from hurting the environment, the widespread use of plastics poses a big danger to human health, much like how climate change does. When plastics break down into tiny pieces called microplastics, they release harmful chemicals that end up in our environment, contaminating our food and water supplies and putting all sorts of life at risk. This harms nature, animals, and us humans too. We must address this issue now to ensure everyone’s safety and well-being.”
Highlighting the importance of community-driven environmental efforts, she emphasized,
“Environmental initiatives within communities are important in combating plastic pollution and promoting sustainability. We must unite to safeguard our planet for future generations. By mobilizing at the grassroots level, we can make tangible change, fostering a collective commitment to environmental stewardship and paving the way for a healthier, more resilient planet for years to come”.
Arabinrin Aderonke emphasized the dire threat plastic waste poses to marine life,
“Every year, millions of tons of plastic find their way into our oceans, imperiling marine species and disrupting entire ecosystems. The situation is critical, and urgent action is needed to reverse this issue.”
She shared insights into FAME Foundation’s approach to combating climate change,
“The Green Ball Project is an initiative in our organization utilised to drive climate change awareness and action among Nigerian citizens. Through this project, we engage tirelessly with grassroots communities, schools, and IDP camps, spreading awareness and educating people on sustainable practices.”
She further urged people to minimize plastic pollution in their daily lives. By embracing recycling practices and advocating for policies that promote plastic waste reduction and effective management, we can all make a significant impact on preserving our planet for future generations.
