FAME Foundation Launches Dance For Good Initiative
Dance for Good is an initiative of FAME Foundation. This project is aimed to strengthen the inclusion of young people through sport. It inspires and teaches valuable life skills to young people – particularly those that are consistently underserved, excluded, or economically disadvantaged.
The implementation of Dance for Good Initiative follows the success of two breakdance event that FAME Foundation hosted. National Breakdance championship in 2023 with support from the French Embassy in Nigeria, the competition spanned across five states – Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, Abuja, and Lagos – attracting participants from over 13 states nationwide. Following rigorous qualifiers, six talented b-boys and b-girls emerged from these regions to compete in a finale held in Lagos. Expert judges, including French break-dancer Bgirl Nadine, evaluated the competitors, highlighting the event’s international appeal and high standards.
Building on this momentum, the second one in 2024 saw a collaboration with the US Mission in Nigeria, featuring renowned American breakdance experts Macca Malik and Jacob “Kujo” Lyons. As part of the U.S. Department of State’s Sports Envoy Program, Malik and Lyons conducted intensive masterclasses in Abuja and Lagos, enriching local talent with their expertise. The culmination of these sessions was a grand performance showcase where participants demonstrated their newfound skills.
Dance for Good Initiative aims to encompass a diverse range of dance styles, promoting inclusivity and cultural exchange. From breakdancing to contemporary forms, the initiative seeks to nurture talent and provide a platform for artistic expression across Nigeria.
Speaking to the press, the Executive Director of FAME Foundation expressed enthusiasm about the initiative’s potential to transform lives through dance,
“Dance for Good Initiative represents our commitment to empowering young Nigerians through creative expression and skill-building, through partnerships with international organizations and local stakeholders, we aim to expand opportunities and promote cultural exchange, fostering a dance community that celebrates diversity and talent.”
She continues by saying that the launch of the Dance for Good Initiative underscores FAME Foundation’s dedication to harnessing the transformative power of dance, thereby paving the way for a brighter future for youth across Nigeria.
