International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 2024
International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is not just a date; it embodies our commitment to eradicating poverty across all communities and nations. This annual observance calls attention to one of humanity’s most critical challenges.
Today, October 17, FAME Foundation stands with the global community to recognize this important day. This year’s theme, “Ending Social and Institutional Maltreatment: Acting Together for Just, Peaceful, and Inclusive Societies,” highlights the crucial relationship between poverty and the systemic injustices that contribute to it.
Speaking to the Press, Arabinrin Aderonke, Executive Director, FAME Foundation, emphasized the urgent need to address systemic discrimination. She stated,
“Social and institutional maltreatment are the various forms of discrimination, exclusion, and violence that marginalized communities face, often at the hands of societal norms and institutional structures. This maltreatment can manifest in many ways, including discrimination in employment, lack of access to essential resources, and violence that further traps individuals in a cycle of poverty. To combat these issues, we must act together; governments, civil society, businesses, and individuals alike.”
Arabinrin Aderonke shared insights on the role of sports in social change, noting,
“Among the many tools available to us in this fight, sport emerges as a powerful catalyst for change. It transcends barriers and brings people together, promoting a sense of community and belonging. Through organized sports programs such as the PLAY IT DREAM IT initiative of FAME Foundation, young people can develop essential life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and discipline; qualities that are invaluable in both personal and professional contexts, thereby enabling youth to break free from the limitations of poverty.”
In her effort to raise public awareness, Arabinrin Aderonke emphasized,
“Advocacy is a very important aspect of using sport as a tool for change. Just as FAME Foundation has remained committed over the years to using sporting events as platforms for raising awareness about pressing social issues, including poverty and gender equality.”
She concluded by urging everyone to join the movement as we mark the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 2024. By harnessing the power of sport and taking collective action against social and institutional maltreatment, we can strive for just, peaceful, and inclusive societies. Each of us has a role to play in advocating for justice and equality, making it clear that together, we can achieve the goal of eradicating poverty!
