The recently concluded COP16, held in Cali, Colombia, from October 21 to November 1, 2024, was a defining moment in the global effort to protect and restore biodiversity. With the theme “Peace with Nature,” the conference united nations and stakeholders to assess progress and refine strategies under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF). This framework, aimed at safeguarding 30% of the world’s land and waters by 2030, reflects humanity’s growing recognition of the urgent need to combat biodiversity loss and mitigate climate impacts.
Throughout the conference, countries presented their progress in developing National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plans (NBSAPs), tools for achieving global biodiversity targets. Delegates acknowledged the challenges ahead, including financial constraints and political priorities, but the shared commitment to transformative action was evident.
The discussions on Digital Sequence Information (DSI) were particularly new, addressing how genetic data can be used equitably while promoting scientific innovation. Financing biodiversity efforts was also part of the discussions, as delegates explored ways to mobilize resources to meet the ambitious target of $200 billion annually by 2030. The connection between biodiversity and climate change was another focal point, emphasizing the dual role of ecosystems in combating climate impacts and supporting resilience.
COP16 concluded with a renewed sense of global urgency and collaboration, reaffirming that protecting biodiversity is not just a necessity but a collective responsibility. The agreements and discussions from this conference set the stage for accelerated action toward a more sustainable and harmonious future.
COP16 and COP29 are two global conferences with different focuses but shared goals of protecting the planet. COP16 deals with biodiversity and works to safeguard plants, animals, and ecosystems through the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Meanwhile, COP29 focuses on climate change, tackling issues like reducing carbon emissions and following up on the Paris Agreement. While COP16 is about protecting nature and species, COP29 is about addressing global warming and its impacts.
