FAME Foundation Condemns Abuse of 17-Year-Old Girl in Awka and Calls for Urgent Action to Protect Children
FAME Foundation is deeply alarmed by reports of a 17-year-old girl in Awka, Anambra State, who allegedly suffered severe abuse at the hands of an adult entrusted with her care. According to the Anambra State Police Command, the suspect, 29-year-old Edeh Osinachi, was taken into custody after the case was reported to the police by the Anambra State Ministry of Education on Tuesday, 3 February 2025. The victim reportedly sustained serious injuries, including burns from a hot-pressing iron, allegedly used as a form of punishment.
Speaking on the matter, Aderonke Atoyebi, Executive Director of FAME Foundation, said;
“I am deeply disturbed by this. Watching the video, I have not gotten myself. This is a tragic and unacceptable act of violence. Child protection and safeguarding are at the core of everything we do at FAME Foundation. No child should ever face abuse, neglect, or harm. Every adult, school, and community have a responsibility to protect children and ensure their safety.”
She continued;
“This incident recalls a similar case in 2024, when a student in one of the schools FAME Foundation works with experienced domestic violence. With the support of NAPTIP, the child was protected, and justice was pursued. That case highlights the importance of early intervention, safeguarding policies, and collaboration with authorities to protect vulnerable children.”
FAME Foundation urges the public, schools, and authorities to remain vigilant, report cases of abuse, and provide support to survivors.
Arabinrin Aderonke further stated;
“We cannot remain silent when children are harmed. Protecting children is not optional; it is an urgent moral and legal responsibility. We demand justice.”
