FAME FOUNDATION CONDEMNS VIOLENCE AT CONDOMS TAPE FESTIVAL IN DELTA, DEMANDS SWIFT JUSTICE AND PROTECTION FOR WOMEN
FAME Foundation strongly condemns the reported acts of violence and human rights violations against women at the Condoms Tape Festival in Delta State. Such actions are unacceptable, unlawful, and a direct assault on the dignity, safety, and fundamental rights of women and girls.
As an organisation committed to advancing gender equality, protecting women’s rights, and amplifying the voices of vulnerable groups, FAME Foundation has consistently worked to challenge harmful norms, promote accountability, and advocate for a society where women can live free from fear, harassment, and violence.
We are deeply concerned by the recurring pattern of gender-based violence in public and cultural spaces. We must be clear: there is no cultural justification for violence. Any culture that enables abuse, intimidation, or the violation of women’s rights must be challenged and reformed. Women are not objects of attack. Women are not targets. Women are human beings entitled to dignity, respect, and protection under the law.
Nigeria’s legal framework is unequivocal on this matter. The (VAPP Act) criminalises all forms of violence against persons in both private and public life. Section 19 of the Act specifically prohibits physical violence, while other provisions address emotional, psychological, and sexual abuse, prescribing penalties including imprisonment and fines for offenders. This law affirms the right of every individual to live free from violence and imposes a duty on authorities to enforce these protections without hesitation.
FAME Foundation therefore calls on the Delta State Government and relevant law enforcement agencies to:
Immediately investigate the incident and identify all perpetrators involved.
Ensure the prompt arrest and diligent prosecution of offenders in line with the VAPP Act and other applicable laws.
Provide comprehensive support, protection, and justice for survivors, including access to medical care, legal services, and psychosocial support.
We also call on community leaders, cultural organisers, and stakeholders to take responsibility for ensuring that events and cultural expressions do not become platforms for abuse or impunity.
Violence against women is not a culture. It is a crime.
FAME Foundation stands in solidarity with all survivors and reiterates its commitment to advocating for a safer, more just society where the rights of women and girls are fully protected and upheld.
