Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja is ready to host the 2026 Confederation of African Cycling (CAC) double championships, 3rd Para-Track and 12th Track African Championships from May 9-17 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome, the Cycling Federation of Nigeria, CFN has disclosed.
According to the Secretary General of the CFN, Joel Akinluwa, the 3rd Para-Track championship will hold first from May 9-11 while the 12th Track championship follows two days later from May 13-17, 2026.
Mr. Akinluwa disclosed that already six countries, namely South Africa, Kenya, Algeria, Zimbabwe, Ghana and Benin Republic have confirmed their participation and would be joined by host, Nigeria whose cyclists have been in camp after the national trials conducted at the same venue last month.
“South Africa is coming with 27 cyclists, Kenya 21, Zimbabwe 5, and Algeria with 21”, Akinluwa said, adding, “we don’t know how many cyclists Ghana and Benin Republic would be coming with. Team Nigeria list would be released in a few days”.
Meanwhile the technical director of the CFN, Bashir Mohammed said that “Team Nigeria would be represented by 17 cyclists in the Para-Track while the Track Championship will have 10 elite men, 6 elite women, 6 junior boys, 6 junior girls as well as six cyclists (three male and female each) in the B-Class and 5 cyclists in the C 1-5 categories.
He commended the National Sports Commission, NSC chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko and the Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade for approving the budget submitted by the CFN for the Championship, assuring them that the CFN would host a hitch free championship.
