FAME Foundation Calls for Urgent Action to End Child Marriage and Invest in Girls’ Rights
FAME Foundation joins the global community to commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child, observed annually on October 11, under the 2026 theme, “End child marriage and invest in girls’ rights!”The theme highlights the urgent need to end child marriage and ensure that every girl has access to the protection, education, and opportunities she needs to shape her future.
Child marriage remains a serious violation of girls’ rights, often depriving them of the opportunity to complete their education, make decisions about their lives, and pursue their aspirations. Early marriage can expose girls to health risks, gender-based violence, and increased economic dependence, while placing adult responsibilities on them before they are physically and emotionally prepared. The consequences can extend throughout their lives, affecting their wellbeing, independence, and future opportunities.
In Nigeria, child marriage remains a significant concern, particularly for girls living in communities where poverty, insecurity, harmful social norms, and limited access to education increase their vulnerability. Some families face difficult economic circumstances that influence decisions about their daughters’ futures, while long-standing beliefs about gender roles continue to reinforce early marriage. Addressing the problem requires sustained efforts to protect girls, support families, and challenge the practices and attitudes that limit girls’ choices.
Speaking on the significance of the day, Arabinrin Aderonke Atoyebi, Non-Executive Director of FAME Foundation, emphasized the need to recognize what girls lose when they are pushed into marriage before they are ready.
“It is painful to see girls who should be in school, discovering themselves and planning for their future, being pushed into marriage before they are ready. We have to ask ourselves what kind of future we are giving these girls if their dreams and choices are taken away from them so early in life. We need to do more to support families, keep girls in school, and help communities understand why girls’ rights must be protected. Every girl deserves the opportunity to grow up, make her own choices, and decide what she wants her future to look like.”
Ending child marriage requires more than awareness campaigns. Girls need access to quality education, healthcare, protection services, and safe spaces where they can speak openly about the challenges they face. Families experiencing economic hardship also need support so that early marriage is not seen as a way out of poverty. Stronger enforcement of child protection laws and access to essential services are critical to preventing child marriage and protecting girls at risk.
The call to invest in girls’ rights extends beyond ending early marriage. Girls need opportunities to develop their talents, access accurate information, participate in decisions that affect their lives, and take on leadership roles. Their voices and aspirations must be taken seriously, with their rights protected regardless of their background or circumstances.
Atoyebi further emphasized that ending child marriage requires a change in how girls’ futures are valued and supported.
“We cannot expect girls to build the futures they dream of when they are denied the opportunities to learn, grow, and make decisions for themselves. Every girl should be able to complete her education, discover her strengths, and pursue her ambitions without being pressured into marriage. We must create an environment where girls’ futures are protected and their potential is given room to grow.”
FAME Foundation remains committed to advancing gender equality and promoting the rights, protection, and development of girls and young women. We continue to advocate for opportunities that enable girls to access education, participate meaningfully in society, and pursue their aspirations without discrimination or harmful restrictions.
The International Day of the Girl Child serves as a reminder that girls should not have to sacrifice their childhood or ambitions because of circumstances beyond their control. Ending child marriage demands sustained commitment to protecting girls’ rights, addressing the conditions that place them at risk, and ensuring that every girl has a genuine opportunity to shape her own future.
On this International Day of the Girl Child, FAME Foundation calls for renewed commitment to ending child marriage and investing in the rights and potential of every girl.
“Every girl deserves more than promises that things will get better. She deserves real opportunities, the support to pursue her education, and the freedom to make decisions about her future. We must continue working until no girl is forced to give up her childhood, education, or dreams because of child marriage. Protecting girls’ rights must be a responsibility we take seriously every day, not only when we commemorate this day,” Atoyebi added.
