Anambra: Association Seeks Safer Mobility, Inclusion
The Nigerian Association of the Blind, Anambra State Chapter, has called for greater public inclusion, safer mobility and improved support for visually impaired persons to protect their dignity, independence and equal participation in society.
The Chairman of the association, Comrade Ernest Okanmelu, made the call during activities marking the 2026 White Cane Day in Amawbia, Anambra State, where participants sensitised the public to the challenges faced by persons with visual impairments and the need for more accessible public spaces.
White Cane Day promotes awareness of the white cane as a mobility aid that enables blind and visually impaired people to navigate their surroundings independently. The observance also highlights the need for accessibility, equal opportunities and respect for the rights of persons with disabilities.
Okanmelu appealed to motorists, commercial transport operators, motorcyclists and other road users to exercise patience and caution around visually impaired pedestrians. He recounted an incident in which an impatient motorcycle rider knocked him down, highlighting the risks blind people face when navigating public roads.
He urged members of the public to offer appropriate assistance when necessary without undermining the independence or dignity of persons with disabilities. The association chairman also called for improved road safety, accessible infrastructure and sustained public awareness to prevent avoidable accidents.
Okanmelu appreciated TRACAS, Star Sunny Motors, the Anambra Broadcasting Service and St Matthew’s Catholic Church for providing facilities and support for the event.
In his keynote address, the Vice-President of the Joint Association of Persons Living with Disabilities, Anambra State Chapter, Comrade Ifeanyi Igwegbe, discussed the history and significance of the white cane.
Igwegbe explained that the theme, “Be My Identity,” highlighted the importance of recognising the white cane as a symbol of independence while encouraging the public to assist visually impaired people respectfully.
The Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs Chinyere Onyekesi, represented by Ms Patricia Ibekwe, commended the association for its awareness efforts and called for greater support for persons with disabilities through practical opportunities and inclusive policies.
The event also featured talent displays by participants, showcasing the abilities of persons with visual impairments and challenging stereotypes that restrict their participation in society.
The association called for stronger collaboration among government agencies, transport operators, religious institutions and community groups to promote safer public spaces, equal opportunities and the full inclusion of visually impaired persons in Nigeria’s social and economic development.
