International Women’s Day (IWD) is a worldwide event with a human rights theme, highlighting the social, economic, cultural and political achievements and contributions made by women. It is held annually on the 8th of March.
The day sees demonstrations and protests aiming to further gender equality. In some areas the day has become an occasion to express appreciation for women in general.
IWD aims to highlight the importance of creating conditions for the elimination of discrimination against women and for their full and equal participation in social development.
The official theme for IWD 2021 as announced by the UN Women on the October 22, 2020 is “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world”.
The fact that 2021 IWD theme is already out, shows the necessity to step up on the gear towards achieving equality. In times of crises, its important for women’s voices to be heard and women to be in command. Without equality we can’t build back better.
