Greenball Project: Cash from Trash – Turning Single-Use Plastics into Income
The Green Ball Project, an initiative of FAME Foundation held its monthly webinar titled Cash from Trash: Turning Single-Use Plastics into Incomeon 24 September 2025 through Microsoft Teams. The session was organized to create awareness about the potential of single-use plastics as a source of income while addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable development.
The webinar was moderated by Olawale Omotego, Project Assistant, Green Ball Project. The speakers were Mr. Echefu Samson, Agroecologist and Climate Justice Advocate, and Ms. Busola Olaleye, Impact Officer at Scrapays Inc.
Mr. Echefu Samson delivered a presentation on environmental protection and the growing practice of reusing plastic materials. He discussed innovative examples of how plastic waste is being converted into useful products and explained the relevance of such practices to environmental sustainability and economic empowerment.
Ms. Busola Olaleye presented on the economic opportunities available in plastic recycling. She outlined how Scrapays Inc. supports individuals through education, tools, and incentives to participate in waste recycling. Her presentation emphasized the contribution of the circular economy to income generation and community development in Nigeria.
The discussions during the session highlighted that environmental protection is an important component of climate action. The speakers also stressed the need for effective policy frameworks and collaboration between government, private organizations, and communities to expand recycling initiatives. Plastic waste recycling was identified as a practical approach to reducing unemployment and promoting sustainable development in Nigeria.
The webinar achieved its objective of raising awareness about the environmental and economic benefits of recycling and the circular economy. It provided participants with information and practical knowledge to support sustainable practices and community engagement in waste management.
