FAME Foundation Marks 2025 International Day of Persons with Disabilities with HerSTEM Inclusive Tournament
FAME Foundation, through its HerSTEM initiative, hosted the HerSTEM Inclusive Tournament on December 3, 2025, at Mainbow National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, in commemoration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The tournament, held under the theme “Fostering a Disability-Inclusive Society for Advancing Social Progress,” celebrated the talents and achievements of persons with disabilities while promoting inclusion in sports. The event was supported by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).
The tournament brought together over 26 athletes who competed in a range of track and field events designed for athletes with visual impairment, cerebral palsy, deafness, amputations, and polio-related disabilities. The competition was expertly managed by a team of twelve coaches, led by Coach Abiodun, alongside FAME Foundation staff, ensuring a well-organized and engaging experience for all participants.
The event was graced by notable figures, including world Paralympic champion and FAME Foundation Goodwill Ambassador, Ms. Folashade Oluwafemiayo, and Mr. Peter Ojo, Head of Para Sports in Ekiti State and former board member of the Para Athletics Federation of Nigeria. Speaking about the tournament, Arabinrin Aderonke Atoyebi, Executive Director of FAME Foundation, emphasized the importance of fostering a disability-inclusive society. She highlighted that sports empower individuals, build confidence and leadership skills, and foster social cohesion. She further noted that millions of Nigerians live with disabilities, and many, particularly girls and women, continue to face barriers that limit their access to education, employment, and sporting opportunities.
Ms. Folashade Oluwafemiayo praised the initiative, expressing hope that it would inspire more persons with physical challenges to engage in sports.
Mr. Peter Ojo commended the foundation for championing inclusivity and encouraged government support for similar initiatives.
The competition progressed smoothly, featuring sprint and field events for athletes across the disability spectrum, and culminated in a medal ceremony celebrating the achievements of the participants.
The HerSTEM Inclusive Tournament not only highlighted the athletic abilities of persons with disabilities but also reinforced the need for a society that values and includes everyone. Through initiatives like this, FAME Foundation continues to champion inclusivity, empower women and girls with disabilities, and demonstrate that sports can be a powerful tool for social progress.
Certificates of participation were also awarded to all athletes, recognizing their determination, skill, and commitment.
