UN Recognises Reproductive Violence as a Distinct Form of GBV
The United Nations Human Rights Council has formally recognised reproductive violence as a distinct form of gender-based violence by adopting a resolution on the protection of the rights of women and girls in humanitarian situations.
The resolution, titled “Promoting, Protecting and Respecting Women’s and Girls’ Full Enjoyment of Human Rights in Humanitarian Situations,” was adopted by consensus during the United Nations Human Rights Council session in Geneva.
Adopted by consensus, the resolution identifies reproductive violence to include forced or denial of contraception, forced pregnancy, forced abortion and forced sterilisation, particularly when carried out with the intent to destroy a group.
It also calls on governments and humanitarian actors to strengthen measures for the prevention of such abuses and ensure survivors have access to safe, confidential and survivor-centred support services.
The Council says the recognition builds on growing evidence from the United Nations and human rights bodies documenting reproductive violence in conflict and humanitarian crises, including in Gaza, Sudan, Yemen, Syria and Ukraine.
Reacting to the development, Global Technical Lead for Humanitarian at the International Planned Parenthood Federation, Dr. Diana Pulido, described the decision as a landmark step that gives long-overdue recognition to a devastating form of violence against women and girls, while urging stronger protection, accountability and support for survivors.
