FAME Foundation Launches “PLAY IT DREAM IT SAFE SPORT PLEDGE” to Promote Safer Sporting Environments
International Safe Sport Day is observed globally on August 8 each year, bringing together athletes, coaches, sports organizations, and safeguarding advocates to reflect on the importance of protecting everyone involved in sport. This year’s global theme highlights that safeguarding should protect every child in sport, including young people who serve not only as athletes but also as coaches, referees, and volunteers.
In commemoration of the day, FAME Foundation, through its PLAY it DREAM it Initiative, has officially launched the PLAY it DREAM it Safe Sport Pledge, a commitment aimed at fostering safer, more respectful, and inclusive sporting environments for children, young people, coaches, officials, parents, volunteers, and all participants in sport.
The pledge calls on individuals and organizations to actively uphold the values of safety, respect, inclusion, accountability, and athlete wellbeing by rejecting all forms of abuse, harassment, bullying, discrimination, neglect, and exploitation in sport.
The launch forms part of our broader campaign, themed “Safe Sport Starts with Safeguarding,” which seeks to raise awareness about the importance of safeguarding and encourage collective action to make sport a place where everyone can learn, play, and thrive without fear of harm.
Speaking on the launch, Arabinrin Aderonke Atoyebi, Executive Director of FAME Foundation, emphasized the importance of turning awareness into action;
“Safe Sport begins with each of us. By taking the Safe Sport Pledge, individuals are making a public commitment to help create sporting environments where every participant is treated with dignity, protected from harm, and empowered to reach their full potential. Safeguarding is not the responsibility of one person, it is a shared responsibility.”
The Safe Sport Pledge is open to athletes, coaches, parents, teachers, sports administrators, volunteers, organizations, and everyone committed to advancing safe and inclusive sport.
As part of the initiative, participants who complete the pledge will receive a digital Certificate of Commitment in recognition of their dedication to promoting Safe Sport and safeguarding principles.
FAME Foundation encourages individuals, sports clubs, schools, federations, and organizations across Nigeria and beyond to join the movement by taking the pledge and becoming champions for safer sport.
Together, we can ensure that sport remains a place where every participant feels safe, respected, included, and empowered to thrive.
