Disability: INEC Seeks Partnership To Boost Inclusion In Zamfara Elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called for stronger collaboration with organisations representing Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to remove barriers hindering their participation in elections in Zamfara State.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Dr Mahmoud Isah, made the call in Gusau on Saturday during a sensitisation programme on disability interventions involving PWDs, Electoral Officers and Disability Desk Officers.
Isah said concerns of persons with disabilities must be prioritised in the planning and implementation of electoral activities, urging PWD representatives to share experiences and recommend practical solutions to improve access.
He noted that the engagement was not a mere formality but an opportunity for dialogue and collaboration towards developing practical solutions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to him, every eligible citizen, including persons with disabilities, has the right to vote and should not be denied access to voter education, collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and polling units.
The REC assured that the commission would continue to promote inclusive electoral practices, accessible information and appropriate support for voters who require additional assistance.
Also speaking, Secretary of the Zamfara State Persons with Disabilities Board, Bilyaminu Umar, commended INEC for promoting disability inclusion and expressed optimism that the engagement would lead to more inclusive and credible elections in the state.
