FAME foundation was established to solicit, encourage and advance the social, emotional and economic wellbeing of women and girls as well as formulate programmes within the framework of national development plan with a view to enhancing the participation of women and advocate for gender parity in the society.
FAME foundation firmly believe that the entire nation, businesses, communities and groups can benefit from the implementation of programs and policies that adopt the notion of women empowerment.
As the world commemorates Menstrual Hygiene Day this year, FAME Foundation, an NGO based in Abuja, aligns with the global community to advocate for the importance of menstrual health and personal hygiene.
The theme for this year is: “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld.”
Speaking to the press, Arabinrin Aderonke Ogunleye-Bello, Executive Director FAME Foundation, emphasizes the importance of acknowledging menstruation as a normal aspect of life.
“Menstruation is a natural part of life, and it’s time we treat it as such. No one should suffer in silence or be held back because of their period. We must break the silence and shame surrounding menstruation, and work together to ensure that all women and girls have access to safe and dignified menstrual health and hygiene.”
Arabinrin Aderonke highlighted the importance of addressing the social and cultural norms that perpetuate menstrual stigma, saying,
“We must challenge the harmful beliefs and practices that shame and silence women and girls during their periods. We must create a society where menstruation is seen as a natural and normal part of life, and where all women and girls can manage their periods with dignity and confidence.”
She continued by emphasizing the need for inclusive and sustainable solutions, saying,
“We must ensure that our efforts to improve menstrual health and hygiene are inclusive of all women and girls, regardless of their abilities, disabilities, or socioeconomic status. We must prioritize sustainable solutions that minimize waste and promote environmental sustainability. We owe it to ourselves, our daughters, and the planet.”
She asserted that to mark Menstrual Hygiene Day, FAME Foundation is organizing an outreach program at a school in Abuja, engaging 100 girls to educate them about the importance of menstrual hygiene, ensuring each student feels confident and informed. Sanitary pads will also be distributed to support their needs.
Arabinrin Aderonke urged governments, civil society organizations, and individuals to step up and tackle the challenges surrounding menstrual health and hygiene in Nigeria. It’s imperative to enhance access to safe and affordable menstrual products, provide menstrual health education, challenge detrimental social and cultural norms, and foster research and innovation to enhance menstrual health and hygiene.
