Ms. Folashade Oluwafemiayo’s two-day visit to Abuja from November 13 to 14, 2024, was a series of engagements that celebrated her achievements as a Paralympic gold medalist and advanced the cause of sports as a tool for inclusion and empowerment. Her arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on November 13 was met with celebration. FAME Foundation staff proudly welcomed her, acknowledging the historic gold medal win at the 2024 Paris Paralympics. This moment was a testament to her resilience and an opportunity to honor her as a national icon who exemplifies determination, excellence, and the power of sports to inspire societal transformation.
Later that day, Ms. Folashade paid a courtesy visit to the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria. She was warmly received by U.S. Ambassador Richard M. Mills, Jr., and Public Diplomacy Officer Brian T. Neubert, who commended her exceptional achievements. The Ambassador highlighted her role as a symbol of perseverance and a source of inspiration for people globally, particularly people with disabilities.
On November 14, Ms. Folashade met with the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mr. Shehu Dikko, to discuss sports development in Nigeria. This meeting went beyond celebrating her success; it was an avenue to address critical issues such as creating opportunities for athletes with disabilities, nurturing young talent, and developing policies that promote inclusivity and excellence in sports. These conversations reflected a shared commitment to leveraging sports as a vehicle for national progress and unity.
The highlight of her visit was the unveiling ceremony for her appointment as FAME Foundation’s Goodwill Ambassador. Held on the same day, the event was a formal recognition of her dedication to breaking barriers and empowering communities. During the ceremony, Ms. Folashade shared her journey to success, emphasizing the role of mentorship, perseverance, and belief in one’s potential. She signed a Memorandum of Understanding and received her certificate of appointment, symbolizing her new role in advancing FAME Foundation’s mission of inclusion and empowerment for women, youth, and athletes across Nigeria.
