FAME foundation was established to solicit, encourage and advance the social, emotional and economic wellbeing of women and girls as well as formulate programmes within the framework of national development plan with a view to enhancing the participation of women and advocate for gender parity in the society.
FAME foundation firmly believe that the entire nation, businesses, communities and groups can benefit from the implementation of programs and policies that adopt the notion of women empowerment.
FAME Foundation strongly condemns the disturbing and shameful assault carried out by Inspector Olowookere Michael of the Nigeria Police Force. The viral video that surfaced online shows him physically attacking his wife in front of their terrified children.
The incident occurred in Osogbo, Osun State, where the Inspector is currently serving with the MOPOL 39 Squadron. According to reports, the wife had simply requested financial support to pay part of their children’s outstanding school fees when the Inspector descended on her with violence, beating her repeatedly as their children screamed and begged him to stop.
What makes this even more painful is that this is not the first time. It has been revealed that this is a pattern of behavior and a history of violence against his wife that has continued unchecked for too long.
At FAME Foundation, we condemn this act in the strongest possible terms. We believe that no uniform, no rank, no title gives anyone the right to inflict harm on another human being, especially someone they vowed to protect. Domestic violence is a crime, not a “family matter” and it must be treated as such.
We are calling on:
The Nigeria Police Force to immediately take disciplinary action and ensure that Inspector Olowookere is suspended and fully investigated without delay.
The Ekiti and Osun State Ministries of Women Affairs and Social Development, alongside relevant human rights institutions, to step in and offer protection, support, and justice to the victim and her children.
All Nigerians to speak up and stand against domestic violence, no matter who the perpetrator is.
As an organization working to end violence against women and girls in Nigeria, FAME Foundation will continue to speak out and demand accountability.
Our thoughts are with the victim and her children. We are committed to doing all we can to support her and all women facing abuse in their homes.
We are watching. Nigerians are watching. The world is watching. Silence will not protect anyone. But justice will.
Enough is enough. Domestic violence must not be tolerated. Not now, not ever.
