Nigerian Para-Powerlifters to Compete at World Championships
Nigeria’s national para-powerlifting team is scheduled to depart for Santiago, Chile, to participate in the World Para-Powerlifting Championships taking place from August 11 to 18.
The team will compete against international athletes in a bid to secure medals and maintain Nigeria’s standing in the sport.
Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, addressed the athletes ahead of their departure, acknowledging their preparation and encouraging them to remain focused.
“You are carrying the hopes and pride of millions of Nigerians. Compete with focus, discipline, and the fighting spirit that has made our country a powerhouse in para-powerlifting,” Olopade said. “We believe in your ability to make history once again and bring glory to the nation.”
The athletes have undergone a training camp in preparation for the event. The delegation includes experienced lifters who have previously represented Nigeria in international competitions.
Nigeria’s participation in the championship aligns with the federal government’s stated commitment to promoting para-sports. Officials from the National Sports Commission noted that the trip reflects ongoing efforts by the Tinubu administration to support differently-abled athletes and ensure their inclusion in global sporting events.
The World Para-Powerlifting Championships in Santiago will feature competitors from multiple countries, with events scheduled across various weight categories.
Nigeria’s contingent is expected to compete throughout the week-long tournament.
