D’Tigress to Face France, S’Korea, Hungary in World Cup Group
D’Tigress have been drawn into Group B alongside France, South Korea, and Hungary for the upcoming FIBA Women’s World Cup later this year.
The draw, held in Berlin, pitted Nigeria against France, the second-best team in the world according to the FIBA women’s rankings.
Rena Wakama’s ladies are ranked eighth globally, while South Korea are 15th, with Hungary in the 19th slot.
France and South Korea defeated Nigeria in the World Cup qualifiers held earlier this year. The results were inconsequential to D’Tigress, which had already booked its World Cup ticket by retaining the Women’s Afrobasket title.
Group A features Japan, Spain, Germany, and Mali, while Belgium, Australia, Puerto Rico, and Turkey make up Group C. The USA, China, Italy, and Czechia will compete in Group D.
The top team in each group will qualify automatically for the quarter-finals. The first and second runners-up in each group will proceed to the qualification round, and the winners will join the top four teams in the final eight.
The World Cup is billed to commence from September 4 to 13 in Berlin, Germany.
D’Tigress missed out on the last World Cup in Australia after FIBA kicked the country out following a federal government ban on international basketball events.
The team will hope to surpass the quarter-final record they set in Tenerife, Spain, in 2018.
