International Youth Day 2020
August 12 is a day set by the United Nations to celebrate the international day of youth and the theme for 2020 is, “Youth Engagement in Global Action”. International youth day is observed yearly to showcase how the engagement of the young generation can cause sustainable change. It is celebrated to throw light on the participation of young individuals, which carries great potential to form better and more sustainable policies.
This years’ theme aims to highlight ways in which the participation of young people at the local, national and global levels is playing a crucial role in enhancing national and multilateral institutions and processes.
Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, the UN is celebrating International Youth Day with a podcast-style discussion that will be hosted by the youth for the youth. This podcast will exhibit how youths are important partners in political processes and in development.
In a press release, the UN Secretary-General; Antonio Guterres called on leaders and adults everywhere to do everything possible to enable the world’s youth to enjoy lives of safety, dignity and opportunity and contribute to the fullest of their great potential. He also stated that realizing the promise of this generation means investing for more in young people’s inclusion, participation, organizations,and initiatives. Youth day was celebrated in Zamfara state, Nigeria in line with the Covid-19 precautionary measures. The online community was definitely not left out, as they shared their support for the day while advocating for youth inclusion and participation.
