On this edition of #PlayitDreamitTuesday, 17 November, 2020. We have with us Mr. Bello Oluwafisayo, CEO Moreambell Concepts and an Ex. Basketball Player and we will be discussing, “using basketball as a sport for development”.
QUESTIONS OF THE DAY
Moving forward to our first question for today.
Q1. What is your understanding on Sports and development”?
A1. Sports, most especially team game has been a source of motivation to many youth and has been the best tool to bring unity among people, tribe and the nation generally. When there is unity the people work together and achieve great things including financially.
Hmmmm very true
Sport is indeed a powerful tool for unity, which eventually leads to development.
Q2.How can basketball be used to achieve gender equality?
A2. Basketball is a game played by both male and female and can also be played mixed which mean both male and female making up the same team. To achieve gender equality, the coaches and officials must treat each party/gender with equal attention and time.
This is the first step to breaking the equality barrier. So each gender should be treated the same way both training and financial wise.
Very true
Equality is a state of being equal, especially in status, rights, or opportunities.
Sports should also exhibit that.
Q3.Even though we are in the 21st century, there are still individuals and societies who are against girls participation in sports.
Mr. Bello, How can we reform the mindset of these group of people?
A3. Safety, I said safety because most parent in the black nation using Nigeria and Yoruba race as a case study, believe that sport men and women are promiscuous in nature and they have to protect their girl child from been used and duped by their male counterparts.
So since they can’t follow her to train every time, they resolve to sitting their child at home or allow her pursue her educational carrier. So proper orientation must be done for parents of girl child to let them see the good in sport.
Wow Insightful
Enlightenment and exposure to the benefits of sport will really go a long way in changing the mindsets of people towards allowing girls to engage in sports.
Q4.What are the challenges faced when engaging girls in basketball?
A4. i. Getting athletes
ii. Equipment and training materials. Please materials used by females are more expensive and scarsely available

iv. Encouragement
Q5. With the numerous challenges affecting girls in sports.
Mr Bello, What do you think is the future of women and girls involvement in sports?
A5. All things being equal and done well the future is bright with necessary equipment and material, the sky is the beginning point.
The future for women and girls sports is quite promising
Q6. Finally Mr Bello , Can you please share with us some practical ways on how government, private organizations and individuals can promote sport and development?
A6. Sponsorship this is divided into many sections.
i. Full sponsorship this includes materials, kits, equipment and financial needs.
ii. Half Sponsorship: this includes just kits and equipment. The company or organisation does not give money but kits and equipment.
